Triggered? How to Find Your Calm

We’ve all been there.
The crushing deadlines.
The endless tasks.
Like running on a wheel, going nowhere.
The pressure quietly builds.
Then – one sharp comment.
And suddenly, you feel like you’re going to erupt.
Leadership isn’t about never feeling provoked.
It’s about how quickly you return to yourself when you feel like you’re going to explode.
When the heat rises:
1. Pause
o Stop. Take three deep breaths.
o Acknowledge the heat rising—"I’m triggered right now."
2. Name It to Tame It
o Anger? Frustration? Fear? Naming the emotion loosens its grip – creates distance.
o You are not your emotion.
3. Step Away
o A brief walk. A change of environment.
o Distance creates clarity and allows you to calm down
4. Respond
o When you’ve returned to yourself, then respond.
o Words spoken in calm land differently than those blurted in the heat of the moment.
Great leaders aren’t unshakeable —they recover faster.
What’s your go-to strategy to stay calm when pressure mounts?
