When was the last time you did something that scared you?

It’s easy to be comfortable with the familiar.

Where having a routine becomes second nature.

Things are easy.

Requiring little thought.

As cosy as familiar is,

It can make you complacent.

And narrow your view of the world.

That’s exactly what happened to me.

So I joined a dance class.

Out of my comfort zone.

Feeling self- conscious.

But strangely excited.

It was  exhilarating.

Stretched in a totally new way.

What did I learn?

1️⃣ Compassion

Trying something new is hard.

Now when a high-flying executive or an emerging leader feels vulnerable in a coaching session,

I really get it.

That empathy makes me a better coach.

2️⃣  Humility

It’s easy to be confident in what you’ve always done.

Being a beginner again was a powerful reminder that I don’t know it all.

And it’s not just ok.

It’s liberating to learn again.

3️⃣ Resilience

The lesson was to keep trying – regardless of how I looked or what others thought.

Acknowledge the fear and do it anyway.

4️⃣  Confidence

Achieving something you’ve not done before is a huge confidence booster.

It stretches your limits.

And makes you wonder what else could you achieve if you just tried?

5️⃣ Self-Awareness

Stretching your limits is crucial.

But so is knowing what they are.

(My learning: Twerking is for the young.   Stretching afterwards is non-negotiable unless you want to waddle like a duck for days.)

Stepping out of my comfort zone wasn't just about learning new moves;

it was practicing the very growth I help facilitate with my clients.

So, when was the last time you did something that scared you?

What did it teach you?
