The Authentic Leader: Action speaks as loud as words

I coach leaders in transition such as taking on a bigger role.
One of the traits that organisations ask of their leaders is authenticity.
Authenticity is about being true to your values
as well as being consistent with your words and actions.
You say what you do and you do what you say.
And
You stand up for your values despite pressures from others.
I worked with a client up for a huge promotion.
The problem?
The client seemed to say all the right things.
Things that they thought others wanted to hear.
Their stakeholders saw through this and felt that they didn’t know what the client stood for.
In our coaching sessions we explored this challenge.
Their value of “keeping the peace” was the main reason why they came across as a people pleasure.
When asked what other values were important to them, “Fairness” was high on their list.
“Fairness” for them was about standing up for others.
Standing up for others and driving through what they thought were right.
Despite fierce objections from senior stakeholders,
their passion for what they believed won them over as well as their respect.
My client earned their promotion by living their values and doing what they say.
How do you live an authentic life?
