A recent coaching client was promoted to a larger role managing a new region.
After the initial excitement, they were filled with self-doubt and a fear of failure.
They feared that they would be found out that they weren’t good enough to do the job.
It paralysed them from making major decisions.
Sound familiar?
So what can you do to quieten the internal chatter that keeps telling you that you’re a fraud? 👇
1. Acknowledge
· Allow yourself to feel what you feel.
· It is normal. Everyone has self-doubt at times.
· You’re used to being an expert/knowing what you’re doing.
· This is a new position/project. Accept that it will take time to learn and grow into the role.
2. Validate
· Your internal dialogue says you’re not good enough.
· But is this true?
· What is the evidence of this?
· Why were you offered the role/project?
· What do others say about you and your abilities?
· Cross check this against your own self-doubt.
· What’s really true here?
3. Past successes
· When did you last feel like a fraud?
· How did you overcome this?
· What did you do?
· What can you take from the past to help you now?
4. Remember
· How do you remember that you are capable and good enough?
· Is it a diary reminder, a picture, a song, a feeling in your body?
· Bring this to mind when you are experiencing self-doubt.
What else have you tried to quieten the internal chatter of feeling like a fraud?
