How do you motivate your team during a looming recession?

This is a common topic with my coaching clients recently.

So how do you inspire your team to go the extra mile when they’re worried if they still have a job?

5 strategies that might help. 👇

1. Be honest, authentic and compassionate.

  • Times are difficult. No point pretending otherwise.

  • Acknowledge their concerns with empathy and compassion.

    • Everyone wants to be seen and heard.

  • Support them where you can such as flexible working schedules/locations.

2. Communicate, communicate and communicate again.

  • Your teams will be anxious about job security.

SO

  • Communicate regularly and transparently about potential changes in the business including potential impact on salaries and positions.

3. Help align their purpose with the company purpose.

  • Purpose often described as the North Star helps you and your team to stay on track during times of immense change.

  • Explore how their work contributes to their own purpose as well as the company’s if possible.

  • It’s a way to stay motivated knowing your daily work is moving you towards a desired goal especially when times are challenging.

4. Celebrate wins no matter how small.

  • Acknowledge and highlight the wins of the team.

  • It shows that you see them and appreciate them which can help with motivation.

5. Look after yourself.

  • You can’t pour from an empty cup.

  • Do the things that recharge you and help you feel alive.

After all

  • How can you motivate your teams if yourself are not motivated?

I’ve noticed that with some of my executive coaching clients, they’re very good at points 1-4 but often forget to look after themselves.

What else would you add to keep your teams motivated during a looming recession?
