I coach leaders in transition such as taking on a larger business remit.

Some of the leaders I work with are “introverts”.

Not comfortable talking about themselves and their successes.

Not wanting to be a tall poppy.

But leadership involves influencing and “selling”.

Especially to your leaders and colleagues where you don’t have formal authority.

So how do you sell yourself to your leaders and others without being “salesy”?

5 things to try 👇

1️⃣ Reframe your thinking

a. You’re having a conversation to inform, share and add value as opposed to selling.

2️⃣ Use your regular 1-2-1s with your leaders as a chance to update them

a. Highlight the achievements of your teams and how they help achieve the company’s goals.

b. Leaders will more likely remember your achievements if they are helping them with their own goals.

3️⃣ Be intentional in establishing relationships with your key stakeholders

a. Not just the ones you work with regularly but those who have influence eg CFO, Head of IT etc…

b. Get to know them outside of scheduled meetings. A coffee chat to understand their challenges and asking how you might be of help goes a long way in raising your profile with those who don’t see you often.

4️⃣ Pay it forward

a. Make time to offer help and advice to others (if requested) even if there is no immediate benefit to you and your team.

b. This helps to establish yourself as an expert and a team player.

5️⃣ Think of “we”

a. Share the spotlight by giving credit to others in a group setting or email for their work.

b. This strengthens morale and fosters team culture and builds trust. Their also likely to do the same for you if an opportunity arises.

What else could you do to sell yourself without being “salesy?

And be comfortable with being a tall poppy?
