Does receiving feedback as a leader make you uncomfortable?

I coach leaders in transition such as taking on a larger role.

One of the common themes is that they rarely get honest feedback.

When I ask whether they ask for feedback, often the answer is no.

The reasons?

They often say lack of time,

or that others are intimidated by their position to give feedback.

When challenged, some say they didn’t want to hear what they suspected about their leadership.

As a leader, it’s important to be aware of how you’re perceived by others. Especially in a new role.

So, ask for feedback.

Instead of looking at feedback as potential criticism,

how about looking at feedback as a gift from those who care enough to be honest?

Encourage others and provide opportunities for honest feedback.

And thank them.

For the courage to be honest.

Even if what they say might sting.

It gives you a chance to correct miscommunications and adapt behaviour.

It also creates safety for the team as they can be honest without fear.
