Advice giving may not be what is wanted.

Have you noticed that when others talk about a “problem”
the default for most of us is to give advice on how to overcome it?
We want to be helpful. We think we’re helping but it may not be what the other person wants.
They could just want to be heard. To vent.
They could also want to feel supported. A “hug”. Either actual or through supportive words.
So how can you find out?
Just ask.
How can I be of help to you?
Jancee Dunn (for the New York Times) writes about asking:
“Do you want to be helped, heard or hugged?”
It’s an easy to way to remind yourself that not everyone wants advice.
