Curiosity is the eliminator of judgement

I coach leaders in transition such as taking on a bigger role.
Often this involves responsibility for a larger geographic remit.
Leading others from different cultures.
Where English is not their native language.
I worked with a client who was in this position.
He was direct, to the point and expected others to do the same.
It’s easy to judge those who take a while to get to the point.
Especially when you’re under pressure to deliver.
But.
Judgement and assumptions help no one.
Your new teams are likely to shut down and not want to communicate.
So how do you not judge?
Be curious.
If your teams aren’t clear, ask:
What’s the thinking behind the proposal?
Be patient as they answer.
Stay curious about the intention behind the words.
You might find that there are cultural and geographical nuances behind their proposals.
Things that you might have missed through judgement and bias – conscious or unconscious.
Help yourself to remove judgement by remaining curious.
What else can you do to be less judgemental?
