“Every other person seems to be a coach and I still don’t really know what coaching is.”

A comment that I overheard.
Not surprising as there are as many definitions of coaching as there are coaches
Coaching is like changing your glasses. 👇
Coaching is about change. Changing the way you do something or a change in behaviour in order to achieve something important to you.
Change starts with changing the way you look at yourself and your situation. Rather hard to do this yourself as we all look at our situation through our own lens which can lead to blind spots and result in us being stuck.
A coach helps you change the lens that you look at your situation through questioning and models; “moving” you around to gain new perspectives, greater objectivity and thus remove blind spots. Like trying on different pairs of glasses.
I worked with an executive to help her gain a promotion and settle into her new role as SVP. Her challenge was her stakeholders didn’t really know who she was or what she really thought. We worked on changing her perspective from needing to show up as how she thought others expected to showing up as her authentic self; that expressing an opinion and disagreeing respectfully was healthy and in service of the company. This in turn changed the way she worked with others. Instead of agreeing just to keep the peace, she voiced her opinions and drove change that were in service of the company.
Sounds simple doesn't it?
However, it takes courage to be honest with yourself as well as trust in your coach to guide you.
Only you can decide if it's worth taking a leap of faith to give coaching a try and change the lens that you use to look at your life.
