I coach leaders in transition such as taking on a larger role.

As a leader you don’t only manage the bright stars

But also those that dim the radiance of your teams.

The ones that seem to survive on drama – one crisis to another.

The ones where it’s always about them.

Where everything seems to be wrong.

And no proposed solution is ever right.

Where you and your teams are  exhausted after being with them.

I worked with a leader on how to manage someone like this on their team.

Here are 3 things to try 👇

1.     Set clear expectations

eg    Establish how meetings (group and 1-2-1s) are to be run.

    🤝 Agenda

🤝 State the challenge, possible solutions and recommendation. Minimises time in negative territory

🤝 Everyone is to state at least one positive point about a proposed solution

🤝 Clear start and end time to meetings and keep to it.

2.     Shift to a positive/solution conversation quickly eg

🔆 What’s the real challenge here and how do we solve this?

🔆 I’m hearing a lot of what you don’t want.  What do you want instead?

3.     Have a 1-2-1

💡 Ask how they think they’re doing and coming across to others.

💡 They might not be aware how they affect others

💡 With kindness, give examples of how you have been receiving them.

And what behaviour you would like to see instead

💡 Keep to the facts and how it affects you.

No matter how they might try to justify/explain their behaviour.

💡 Set a follow up meeting to review progress.
