What are you not hearing that people are saying?

I coach leaders in transition such as taking on a bigger role.

I work with many clients who find themselves feeling quite isolated.

You get used to those around you doing what you say.

They often tell you what they think you want to hear.

After all, you’re in a position of authority.

But.

Just because no one says anything negative it doesn’t mean you’re doing a great job.

When uncertainty is high such as in a new role, getting honest feedback is essential.

It allows you to fix things while there’s still time.

So how do you get honest feedback?

Be curious.

Ask.

Open ended questions are best.

·      What’s the one thing I can do to support you?

·      What’s the one thing I can do/stop doing to make it easier to work with me?

Then listen.

With your whole being.

Not just to the words.

What does their body language suggest?

What they are not saying can be more important than what is said.

Especially if they don’t know you or trust you.  Yet.

Accept

what is said.

Without being defensive or trying to justify.

No matter how uncomfortable their response made you feel.

Then come back to them with your actions to address their points.

It shows that you take their feedback seriously

and it fosters greater trust.

It will also encourage them to provide feedback in the future.

What else can you do to get honest feedback?
