Focus on what you want instead of what you don’t want

I work with leaders in transition such as taking on a bigger role.
One of my clients wanted to explore how they wanted to come across during challenging times.
They kept saying:
“I don’t want to come across as stressed.”
“I don’t want to be unapproachable.“
“I don’t want to appear moody.”
When I said:
“We seem to be very clear about what you don’t want.
What do you want instead?”
There was silence for a long time.
The answer that emerged:
“I want to be calm like a stream and flow like water around challenges.”
There was clarity and specificity in the way that my client wanted to show up. Something to aim for.
It’s often easy to know what you don’t want but harder to know what you do want.
If you don’t know what you want, how do you know when you’ve got it?
