A prospect wanted to hire me

They were willing to pay top $
I said no.
Here’s why.

The scenario
The company wanted me to coach a direct report to a senior director.
The director had an altercation with their report and complained.
Coaching was offered to pacify the director.
And coaching had not been discussed with the direct report.
Coaching was also not offered to the director.
The director was the one who complained.
Thus, it was viewed that the “problem” was with the report.
The challenge
Coaching works best when the person wants to be coached.
If the person hasn’t been told that they have a “developmental” area, coaching is unlikely to succeed.
Also, coaching isn’t a bandage for areas that leaders and a company do not want to deal with.
It’s additional support for developing and growing others.
It seemed like they wanted the problem to go away and someone else to do it.
Alternatives
I suggested a 3-way conversation between the director and report and I to facilitate a way forward.
Or coaching for the director.
Part of the conversation could be about moving the report to a different team.
All suggestions rejected.
Walking away
I could’ve said yes.
Made some $.
I said no.
For me it’s about doing what’s right for the person and the company.
The proposed company solution was not it.
Could I have done with more work?
Yes.
But will I sleep well at night?
Definitely.
Choosing to live my values makes decision making easy.
Even if it makes things hard in the short term.
How do you make hard decisions?
